Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI)
In collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, the Cornwall Police Service is engaging youth in an innovative employment experience within a safe and healthy work environment.
The goal of the YIPI Program is to offer youth an opportunity to develop job skills, to inspire young people to consider a career in policing and to become ambassadors of Cornwall Police Service by improving police and community relations.

What is the Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI)?
- YIPI is a paid personal, professional, and community development opportunity for Cornwall youth aged 15-18. As employees of the Cornwall Police Service (CPS), youth engage in hands-on learning experiences that emphasize the importance of leadership, teamwork, and community engagement. YIPI aims to empower youth to make positive changes within their communities, personal lives, and the lives of others.
How do I apply?

As a part of the selection process for this position, all applications will be assessed through an application review, interview, and background check. How many positions are available?
- Eight (8) Students were hired for Summer 2024. Details to come for 2025.
Where will the program be hosted (location)?
- The 2024 Summer Initiative was in-person at St. Lawrence College.
- Any programs or trainings happening off campus were handled by program staff, and youths started and ended the day at the college.
How much will I get paid?
- Students in 2024 earned the adult minimum wage ($16.55 per hour) bi-weekly by direct deposit.
What are the working hours?
- This is a paid student position running for eight (8) weeks, 32 hours per week, four (4) days a week.

What happens if I have a vacation planned for the summer?
- Due to the competitive nature of the program, we are looking for candidates who are available for the entire length of the summer. We would encourage you to apply for a future summer program!
What happens if I miss a day of work?
- Due to the competitive nature of the program, we are looking for candidates who are available for the entire length of the summer. Missing a couple of days due to unforeseen circumstances will not jeopardize your ability to graduate, but we ask you to provide as much notice as possible.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be between the ages of 15-18 by the time of the program start date.
- Have never been previously hired for the CPS (for any amount of time)
- Reside in Cornwall, ON
- Currently enrolled in secondary school
- Be returning to secondary or post-secondary school in upcoming school year
- Be responsible for transportation to and from the work location
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Cannot be the child of a current CPS staff member.
Am I still eligible if I have been involved with the police?
- Yes, we will be reviewing all applications on a case by case basis.
Student Mentorship Program
This paid position is under the supervision of the Officer in Charge of Support Services and is a full-time temporary position during the summer months, typically ending just before the beginning of the school year in September. The successful candidate works in the Records Department assisting the Receptionist and Records Clerks. Also, the candidate will have the opportunity to learn about other areas of the organization, how a municipal police service works, and attend weekly mentor team meetings.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a student returning to full-time studies at the college or university level in September of that year
- Ability to operate office equipment such as telephones, photocopier, cash register, and fax machine
- Experience dealing with customers is considered an asset
- Experience in administrative work is considered an asset
- Be able to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
The successful candidate will demonstrate skills and abilities regarding the following:
- Strong communications skills
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Ability to multi-task in a busy environment
- Ability to take initiative to address issues as they arise
The successful applicant will be expected to work Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm.

Co-Op Students
Cornwall Police Service (CPS) supports the Co-operative Educational Programs offered by the local Boards of Education and post-secondary institutions. CPS is focused on offering opportunities to Co-operative Education Students interested in the Law Enforcement field to support them in obtain work experience and achieve credits toward their diplomas, certificates or degrees. The Cornwall Police Service strives to promote and demonstrate the values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. We are committed to reflecting the diversity of the community we serve and encourage qualified candidates of all backgrounds and abilities to apply.
Selected applicants will be required to undergo a background check prior to commencing their co-op placement with Cornwall Police Service.
