Cornwall Police Service

Cornwall Collision Reporting Centre

Cornwall’s Collision Reporting Centre opened on April 26, 2005 as a six-month pilot project with Accident Support Services International Ltd., which operates similar facilities in Ontario.

The CRC provides a convenient reporting environment to the public for the investigation of property damage vehicle collisions. Rather than Police attending the scene of an accident, citizens exchange information, and then they have 7 business days to report property damage only collisions, towed or drivable, at the Collision Reporting Centre. Police will continue to attend collisions involving injury or death, alcohol, criminal activity, vehicles transporting dangerous goods or police vehicles.

The purpose of the CRC is to provide assistance to persons who are involved in a motor vehicle collision and to ensure that the insurance industry is involved from the beginning. Claims are taken care of sooner and both the motorist and the insurance industry benefit from this service.

WHAT IS A COLLISION REPORTING CENTRE?

A Collision Reporting Centre is a facility where the public in Cornwall report traffic collisions and is located at 340 Pitt Street, Cornwall, Ontario.

The Highway Traffic Act requires that all collisions where persons are injured, where damage exceeds a combined value of $2,000.00, or where there is damage to highway property, MUST be reported to the Police.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS

Steps to be taken by all drivers before attending the Collision Reporting Centre:

  1. Check the "exception list" to determine if Police presence is required at the scene.
  2. If it is safe to do so, remove vehicle from the roadway.
  3. Exchange information with the other involved parties, including independent witnesses. Obtain names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance and vehicle particulars, including licence plate number.
  4. As soon as possible, attend with your vehicle at the Police Collision Reporting Centre. If your vehicle is drivable, you have 7 business days to report your accident at the Collision Reporting Centre.
  5. Bring your documentation with you to the Police Reporting Centre, i.e. drivers licence, ownership and insurance. The driver must attend with the vehicle.

DO YOU REPORT HIT AND RUN COLLISIONS AT THE COLLISION REPORTING CENTRE?

YES, if there is no suspect vehicle.

A Police Officer will be dispatched if the suspect vehicle is still in the area of the collision.

WHEN SHOULD A DRIVER ATTEND THE POLICE REPORTING CENTRE?

A driver involved in a property damage collision will report the collision at the Collision Reporting Centre during business hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday), with the following exceptions:
