In collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, the Cornwall Police Service is engaging youth in an innovative employment experience within a safe and healthy work environment.

The goal of the YIPI Program is to offer youth an opportunity to develop job skills, to inspire young people to consider a career in policing and to become ambassadors of Cornwall Police Service by improving police and community relations.

What is the Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI)?

  • YIPI is a paid personal, professional, and community development opportunity for Cornwall youth aged 15-18As employees of the Cornwall Police Service (CPS), youth engage in hands-on learning experiences that emphasize the importance of leadership, teamwork, and community engagement. YIPI aims to empower youth to make positive changes within their communities, personal lives, and the lives of others.

How do I apply?

  • Further information will be posted once the application process for 2026 is open. To be considered, candidates will have to complete the application, which will be found at www.cornwallpolice.com/careers. As a part of the selection process for this position, all applications will be assessed through an application review, interview, and background check. Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

When will I hear back?

  • Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by the CPS. 

How many positions are available? 

  • Eight (8) Students were hired for Summer 2025. 

How much will I get paid?

  • Students in 2025 earned the adult minimum wage ($16.55 per hour) bi-weekly by direct deposit.

What are the working hours?

  • This is a paid student position running for eight (8) weeks, 32 hours per week, four (4) days a week.

What will I be doing?

  • The mission of YIPI is for our members to be UNITED:
    • Understand and appreciate diversity
    • Navigate their future through setting personal and professional goals
    • Involve themselves as leaders in the community
    • Think and reflect globally
    • Empower others to be ambassadors of change
    • Discover policing beyond the uniform.
  • Youth participate in a variety of workshops, training, community work, personal/professional development, CPS unit presentations, and more!

Who do we contact if we have questions?

What happens if I have a vacation planned for the summer? 

  • Due to the competitive nature of the program, we are looking for candidates who are available for the entire length of the summer. We would encourage you to apply for a future summer program!

What happens if I miss a day of work? 

  • Due to the competitive nature of the program, we are looking for candidates who are available for the entire length of the summer. Missing a couple of days due to unforeseen circumstances will not jeopardize your ability to graduate, but we ask you to provide as much notice as possible. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be between the ages of 15-18 by the time of the program start date.
  • Have never been previously hired for the CPS (for any amount of time)
  • Reside in Cornwall or Akwesasne, ON
  • Currently enrolled in secondary school
  • Be returning to secondary or post-secondary school in upcoming school year
  • Be responsible for transportation to and from the work location
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Cannot be the child of a current CPS staff member.

Am I still eligible if I have been involved with the police?

  • Yes, we will be reviewing all applications on a case by case basis.
