CPS SUSPENDS USE OF CRIME STOPPERS PLATFORM FOLLOWING DATA BREACH

Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) is aware of the reported data breach involving the third-party reporting platform used by Crime Stoppers programs across Canada and recognizes the seriousness of this incident, particularly given the importance of protecting the anonymity and safety of those who provide information.

Out of an abundance of caution, the CPS has temporarily suspended its use of the Crime Stoppers platform while more information about the incident becomes available.

“Public trust is essential to effective policing, and people who come forward with information must have confidence that their safety and privacy are taken seriously,” said Deputy Chief Chad Maxwell. “We recognize the concerns this incident may raise and have taken precautionary steps while we work to better understand the situation.”

Crime Stoppers operates independently from the CPS. The CPS is reviewing available information to better understand the scope and potential impact of the incident. At this time, the CPS has not received confirmation that information submitted through the local Crime Stoppers program has been affected.

During this period, members of the public who wish to report a crime, suspicious activity or information related to an ongoing investigation are encouraged to contact the CPS directly. While the CPS takes the protection of personal information seriously and handles it in accordance with its privacy and information security obligations, reporting directly to police may not offer the same anonymity as Crime Stoppers.

In an emergency, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency incidents, contact the CPS at 613-932-2110 or visit CornwallPolice.ca for available reporting options.

Questions regarding the breach, the scope of any affected information and the measures taken in response should be directed to the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association.

The CPS will continue to monitor developments and assess any potential impacts on police operations.
