July Traffic Initiative
Published on July 11, 2023Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) is committed to reducing the number of distracted drivers on our roadways. During the month of July, officers will be increasing their focus towards drivers using hand-held devices while operating a motor vehicle as part of the CPS’ monthly traffic initiative.
Whether you are driving, stopped in traffic or at a red light, it is illegal to use a phone or other hand-held wireless communication device. First time offenders are subject to a fine of up to $1000, three demerit points, and a 3-day suspension.
“Distracted driving poses a significant risk to the safety of other motorists and pedestrians, and we recognize that it is a year-round concern in our community,” said Constable Patrick Depratto of the Traffic Unit. “Motorists can expect to see our officers fully engaged in this traffic initiative, as we work towards creating safer roadways in the City of Cornwall.”
The National Safety Council reports that mobile phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes annually. In the 2021 CPS Strategic Plan Public Survey, 73% of respondents indicated distracted driving was a top crime concern.
Enhancing traffic safety is a major objective within the CPS Strategic Plan. As such, monthly safety initiatives have been developed to keep the public informed and promote safer roadways and bike paths. These initiatives will be carried out by the Traffic Unit, as well as Community Patrol Officers.
