TWO INDIVIDUALS CHARGED IN RELATION TO RECENT HATE CRIME
Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) has charged two individuals in relation to a recent hate crime.
On Sept. 12, 2024, police responded to a mischief complaint and an investigation ensued. Members of the CPS observed graffiti, which was spray painted onto an Adolphus Street business. The graffiti featured a Nazi flag and a hateful phrase directed toward Jewish people.
Members of the CPS’ hate crime unit continued to investigate the incident, and on Sept. 27, 2024, images of the two suspects were shared on the service’s social media accounts.
Subsequently, the following two individuals were charged in relation to the incident:
- A 15-year-old Cornwall youth was arrested on Oct. 1, 2024, and charged with fail to comply with probation order and mischief under $5,000. It is alleged on Sept. 12, 2024, the youth was bound by a probation order with the relevant condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. On Oct. 1, 2024, the youth attended police headquarters to address the matter. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court at a later date. His name was not released as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
- Koby Cardinal, 19, of Cornwall, was arrested on Oct. 4, 2024, and charged with mischief under $5,000 and counselling to commit an indictable offence not committed of uttering threats to kill Jewish people. The man was released to appear in court on Nov. 14, 2024.
“This type of behavior has no place in our society, and we are hopeful that more members of our community will continue to feel comfortable reporting such incidents,” said S/Sgt. Tracey Pilon of the Criminal Investigation Division. “We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the members of the public who came forward with information that helped us identify those responsible.”
